40 JAHRE VARIOTHERM
Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt
Das Leben schreibt bekanntlich die besten Geschichten. Die Geschichte von Variotherm wurde von Mitarbeitern, Partnern, Freunden und treuen Kunden geschrieben. Den ersten Schritt zu dieser 40-jährigen Entwicklung setzte Visionär und Firmengründer Wilhelm Watzek im November 1979.
"Wenn ein Traum nicht in Erfüllung geht, dann hat das Leben wohl Größeres mit einem vor", das kann Wilhelm Watzek von sich behaupten. Er wollte ursprünglich Pilot werden, doch dann wurde ihm eine Brille verordnet und diese Idee war passé. Stattdessen wurde eine neue Seite im Buch seines Lebens aufgeschlagen. Dies war der Beginn einer spannenden und erfolgreichen Firmengeschichte.
Ein Mauseloch von Raum zu Raum
Als Vertreter und späterer Vertriebsleiter für ein neuartiges Heizsystem aus Amerika legte Wilhelm Watzek im Jahr 1979 den Grundstein für Variotherm. Er brachte die „Base board heatings“, die Vorfahren der heutigen Variotherm Heizleisten, nach Österreich. „Ein Mauseloch von Raum zu Raum genügt“, so der erste Werbeslogan, der damals den „Do-it-yourself“-Gedanken verbreitete. Die ersten Selbstmontagesysteme der Heizleisten waren eine Revolution auf dem Heizungsmarkt.
Die Anfangszeit war für Variotherm sehr schwierig, da der Markt kaum offen für Neues war. "Nur wenige Außenseiter beschäftigten sich mit unserem Produkt", so Wilhelm Watzek über die Entwicklung des Heizungsmarktes.
"Vor 40 Jahren bestand unser Markt im Wesentlichen aus Radiatoren. Fußbodenheizungen waren verpönt und galten als staubaufwirbelnd und ungesund, weil sie damals noch mit Hochtemperatur betrieben wurden. Heute arbeiten Flächenheizungen mit niederen Temperaturen. Auch Computer und Roboter gab es in der Fertigung noch nicht. Geschäfte wurden zu meiner Zeit noch von Mensch zu Mensch abgewickelt."
Mit niederen Temperaturen zur Wohlfühloase
Als Mitglied des Österreichischen Baubiologischen Instituts legte der Variotherm Firmengründer im Jahr 1987 den Grundstein für Nachhaltigkeit im Unternehmen. Er entwickelte das erste Niedertemperatursystem: Rohre wurden direkt an der Wand montiert und mit einem temperaturbeständigen Putz versehen. Die erste Variotherm Wandheizung war geboren. Ein Heizsystem, das nicht nur heizt, sondern das Zuhause zu einer Wohlfühloase macht. Weitere Innovationen am Heizungsmarkt sollten folgen.
Der Juniorchef übernimmt das Ruder Jeder Familienbetrieb kommt an den Punkt, an dem ein Generationenwechsel ansteht. Bei Variotherm war es 1999 soweit: Wilhelm Watzek übergab seinem Sohn Alexander das Unternehmen. Alexander bewunderte den immensen Einsatz und das große Gespür seines Vaters für Werbung.
Er erinnert sich: "Die Grundentscheidung, 1999 die Firma zu übernehmen, war eine ganz bewusste. Ich wollte Variotherm auf der Basis und den Entscheidungen meines Vaters weiterführen, aber mit eigenen Ideen. Und in Wirklichkeit geht es immer darum, dass du Spaß an dem hast, was du machst."
Zwei Jahre später brachte der Juniorchef die VarioKomp, die Fußbodenheizung im Trockenbau auf den Markt: Eine Bodenheizung mit 20 mm Aufbauhöhe, die ideal bei einer Heizungssanierung eingesetzt werden kann und im Handumdrehen warm wird. Sie gilt heute noch als Nummer 1 des Unternehmens.
Nach zwei weiteren Jahren sollte die Automatisierung Einzug nehmen: Schritt für Schritt wurde die Produktion automatisiert und Produktionsanlagen für ModulPlatten (Wand- und Deckenheizung/Kühlung) und Kompaktplatten (Fußbodenheizung) angeschafft.
Kühlen ist die Zukunft
"Kühlen? Das war lange kein Thema. Obwohl es mit unseren Produkten theoretisch schon immer möglich war", so Geschäftsführer Alexander Watzek. "Doch aufgrund der stets heißer werdenden Sommer, ist das seit einigen Jahren immer mehr Thema. Und so entwickelten wir bereits 2002 die Kühldecke, die unser Produktsortiment abrundet."
Die Grundvoraussetzung war vor 40 Jahren dieselbe wie heute: Für den Menschen ein gesundes Raumklima zu schaffen, in dem er sich wohl fühlt.
Alexander Watzek ist dankbar über die vergangenen 40 Jahre: "Wir möchten uns bei unseren Kunden, Partnern und Mitarbeitern für den unermüdlichen Einsatz und die Freude an und mit Variotherm bedanken. Wir sind schon gespannt, welche Stories wir noch gemeinsam schreiben dürfen."
